Sheffield Concord Netball Club have made the perfect start to the South Yorkshire and Yorkshire Regional League. They have 4 teams in the South Yorkshire league and the first and fourth team have won all their games so far.
In the Yorkshire Regional league, Sheffield Concord’s first game on Sunday 23rd October at the EIS was a local Derby against the Sheffield Open.
Due to an injury to the captain, Cathy McKenzie and few players leaving to pursue careers ,elsewhere the team was slightly changed from last season. Concord made a promising start with Roanne Minshull at GS and Becca Podlaski at GA both shooting well.
Fran Duffy came on for her debut game in the second quarter along with Charlotte Cousins at GD. Fran quickly fit into the team and linked with centre Laura Hughes and WA Jo Smith well. Vicky Greensil at WD brought the ball down nicely from defence to attack. By half time the score was 32-19.
With an excellent team talk at half time from coach Helen Thorneloe, all players went back on with determination to extend their lead. The defence were very tight and broke down the oppositions centre pass well. Fran Duffy at GA and Becca Podlaski GS converted most opportunities into goals and increased the lead to 22 goals.
In the final quarter the circle defence team, Jenny Stones and Charlotte Cousins, worked together excellently and Sheffield Open could only score 3 goals. Even so, Sheffield Open battled until the end but the final score was 60-31. Player of the Match was Jenny Stone
