Sheffield Concord First team won their third regional league match on Sunday 20th November against Shipley.
It now means the squad are in joint top position of the league following three straight wins so far this season.
The final score was 54 – 44.
The squad were missing three of its regular players but it still consisted of a blend of experience and youth. Claire Wiltsher, just 15 years old making her debut put in a first class performance making a real impact against the Shipley GA who was on top form early on in the game. The end of the first quarter saw Concord behind 10 -13 with a slow start to the game for Concord and some unforced errors.
The team worked hard and with real strength and determination and deserved the lead of 25 – 24 at half time.
Into the third quarter, the defensive duo of Jenny Stones and Claire Wiltsher began to force errors and make crucial interceptions for the attack to convert into goals. Strong centre court play from Laura Hughes and Jo Smith with effective and accurate feeds enabled the player of the match Becca Podlaski to accurately put the ball in the net. The Shipley defence soon realised the need to double mark the Concord Shooter but Concord simply adjusted their play which allowed Molly Shorter the GA, to be played into the circle sometimes receiving the ball simply under the post, of course she finished the job off with more accurate shooting and punished the Shipley defence.
Concord continued to grow in strength and pulled away to win the last quarter 15 – 8.
A fantastic team performance showing real depth in talent and a desire to succeed.
The next regional game is against Sheffield Stormers on Sunday 18th December. Let’s hope we can make it 4 wins from 4.
